One Dead Following Cheese Recall Over E. coli: What You Need to Know
Safety first: Before we dive into the details, remember that the most important thing is to protect yourself from potential foodborne illness. If you have any of the recalled cheeses in your fridge, do not consume them. Throw them away or return them to the store where you purchased them.
Here’s what we know about the situation:
- One person in Scotland has died after contracting E. coli, potentially linked to unpasteurized cheeses produced by Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese in England.
- Thirty confirmed cases of E. coli have been reported across England and Scotland since late July, affecting people aged seven to 81.
- Four varieties of Mrs Kirkham’s cheese have been recalled: Mild and Creamy Lancashire, Tasty Lancashire, Mature Lancashire, and Smoked Lancashire.
- No definitive link has yet been established between the E. coli cases and the recalled cheeses. Investigations are ongoing.
Symptoms of E. coli infection:
- Severe abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea, often bloody
- Vomiting
- Fever
If you experience any of these symptoms after consuming cheese or other potentially contaminated food, seek medical attention immediately.
Staying safe:
- Check your fridge for the recalled cheeses. If you have any, do not eat them.
- Practice good food hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling food, and wash fruits and vegetables before eating them.
- Cook meat and poultry to proper temperatures.
- Refrigerate perishable foods promptly.
